Backfire is a hex so it doesn't work in conjunction with epidemic as epidemic applies to conditions.

Easy solution for that : Do not bring a pet :P I'm not sure what the purpose of a pet is in PvP other than doing additional damage?. Pets most certainly are not going to "divert attention" from you like it would in PvE [and basically serve as a tank], players are a bit more clever than that though. Unless of course you -want- people to go for your pet first to disable you, then it will serve as a clever diversion for you to maybe get that meteor shower or earthquake off, hell i would probably pull a phoenix while the sucker hits my pet. Nice mind game to play :P

Darn youre right, will have to look into the burning/blind/slow and poison conditions then i suppose
